What is Emphysema?

Emphysema is a long-term, progressive disease of the lungs that results in damage to the alveolar (tiny air sacs in the lungs) walls and capillary blood vessels that run within them . It is one of the conditions associated with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). When you breathe in, air passes through the bronchi and the smaller bronchioles until it reaches the alveoli. This is where oxygen passes to the blood stream and carbon dioxide passes from the blood to be exhaled.

As the alveoli become increasingly damaged, it becomes more difficult for your body to obtain the oxygen it requires, as the total area within the lung where blood and air can exchange is reduced.  In more severe emphysema, there is also a reduction in the elasticity of the walls of the remaining alveoli that have not been destroyed. When breathing out the alveoli and the small airways collapse making it difficult for air to be exhaled and even more difficult for new air to be breathed in.

The symptoms of emphysema begin to appear progressively and worsen as damage to the lungs increases. They include:

  • Chronic coughing
  • Breathlessness – initially only after exertions but gradually this will become constant
  • Wheezing
  • Phlegm
  • Fatigue
  • Weight loss
Sufferers of emphysema are also more prone to chest infections and pneumonia.

Causes of Emphysema

The major cause of emphysema is cigarette smoking over a long period of time. While quitting smoking should see an improvement in symptoms and may slow the progress of the disease, it will not cure the condition.

Other risk factors for emphysema are long term exposure of the lungs to occupational pollutants and dust.
