I Have a Cold. Should I Visit The Salt Room?

As we move right in to the heart of the Cold and Flu season, I am often asked if it’s still OK to visit the salt rooms whilst coughing and generally feeling unwell.

Whilst It’s refreshing to hear genuine concern for others’ it’s also the perfect time to be in the salt rooms, giving your body a needed boost. The antiseptic properties of salt greatly assist in combating infection.

But what about the spreading of these illnesses? Well, once the salt begins to flow in the salt room, very little in the way of airborne bacteria or viruses can survive in the highly sterile environment caused by the dry sodium aerosol. In fact, the only risk in transferring illnesses is on your way to the salt room, in a shop or other direct contact with people.

 

Having said that, we do understand these concerns and we aim to take all possible precautions. So if you are feeling unwell, don’t think you can’t come to the salt rooms. By all means do come, but please advise us that you are ill so we can safely segregate any susceptible people and, where possible, we will always endeavour to give you a private room when you are potentially contagious.

 

Thinking that you shouldn’t come to the salt rooms when you are feeling ill is like saying ‘don’t go to the Doctors’ when you are ill!” THAT’S when you really need a good dose of salt therapy the most; to beat the winter cold and flu bugs.

How to Prevent Winter ALLERGIES…

 

As the temperature drops with the coming of autumn, so too does the pollen count. Allergy sufferers might think they can breathe a sigh of relief, but in reality, this may not be the case…

 

Following the unseasonable wet start to the year, mould has become a problem, triggering a worsening of allergy attacks and asthma episodes. On top of this, there is also the annual autumn indoor spike in the dust mite population.
Indeed, studies at the Woolcock Institute of Medical Research in Sydney show that dust mite levels can increase two to three-fold during late autumn, compared with summer levels. And while dust mite levels can then decline over winter, allergy sufferers often come into closer contact with the source of their constant irritant.ion spike, which can make conditions pretty uncomfortable for allergy sufferers.
What Can You Do?
Bedding, rugs, stored woollen clothes, carpets are all ideal breading grounds for dust mites. Be sure to clean all of these types of items, especially those that have been in storage, before use. In winter, the temptation might be to keep windows and doors closed, but this can exacerbate the problem, leading to poor ventilation which can aid the growth of mould.
So be sure to clean those items where dust mites love to grow, and encourage fresh airflow thought your home. Be sure to venture outside as often as time permits as the air outside in winter can often provide some relief away from these two nasty allergens.

A new series of Mediation & Breath-Work Classes in the Salt Room is due to start this week. Guided by the wonderful Maryann of Sage-Yoga-Arts.

Classes are being held in two streams:

  • Friday at 1:00pm – commencing 14 March, 2014 (places available on casual basis)
  • Saturday at 8:30am – commencing 15 March, 2014 (currently full)

Sea Salt Caramel Brownie

I borrowed this recipe from www.glutenfreefix.com and there are so many more healthy, delicious recipes to choose from. This caught my eye because it had Sea Salt in the name. Very appropriate for Salt Sanctuary…

The Perfect Brownie

  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 4 oz unsweetened chocolate
  • 1/4 cup coconut oil
  • 3/4 cup honey
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 2 tablespoons coconut flour, packed
  • 1/4 cup almond flour, packed
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  1. Preheat oven to 325.  Grease a 9×9 square baking dish (for thick brownies) or 9×13 glass dish for regular brownies.
  2. Melt together the butter, chocolate and coconut oil.
  3. Whisk in the honey.  Allow mixture to cool down before adding your eggs.
  4. Stir in your eggs.
  5. Add your flours, baking soda and salt.  Whisk well to combine.
  6. Spread mixture evenly into greased baking dish.
  7. Bake for 25-30 minutes.
  8. Let cool completely before topping with caramel.

Easy Caramel

  • 1/2 cup of butter, room temperature
  • 1/2 cup of honey
  • 1/2 cup of cashew cream, coconut milk or heavy cream
  1. In a heavy bottom saucepan, combine butter and honey.  Bring to a boil.
  2. Continue to cook, stirring frequently until it turns a dark caramel color.  You want it to be slightly darker than what you want in the end.  Remove from burner.
  3. Add milk (stand back, it will splatter!)  Stir to combine.
  4. Let cool slightly and allow to thicken, about 5 minutes.
  5. Pour caramel onto cooled brownies.  Spread evenly to cover.
  6. Sprinkle with sea salt.
  7. Cut into small squares, as they are very rich!  These cut most cleanly once chilled.
  8. Store in an airtight container in the fridge up to 1 week.

Study Links Fast Food to Asthma, Eczema & Hay Fever

An international study involving over 500,000 teenagers and children found that regularly consuming 3 or more serves of fast food a week was linked to a whopping 39% (teens) and 27% (kids) increase in severity of Asthma, eczema and hay fever!

The study, which was published in the respiratory journal Thorax, also found that eating 3 or more serves of fruit saw a reduced incidence of severity of these conditions by between 11 and 14 per cent.

Clearly, more damage is being done to our young children from eating fast, fatty, processed foods than obesity alone. Fast foods contain saturated fats, preservatives and fatty acids (free radicals), whereas fruit is full of healthy vitamins and minerals but also rich in antioxidants.

Whilst the authors of the study clearly point out that fast food does not cause the diseases, but rather a higher risk of the disease becoming more severe.

Another example confirming the old saying, “You are what you eat!”
